Our purpose is to showcase folk, devotional, and classical arts of the Indian Subcontinent, on stage, digital and streaming media. Using the arts to foster dialogue and increase civic participation, we invest in mid-career artist development in the creation of new dynamic programs which reflect important contemporary and traditional themes. This helps education children and adults on folk art forms of South Asia.

For the next 3 years, our focus will be limited. Across 2027, the focus will be on the below art forms:

  1. Folk Music (Qawwali music, Punjabi and Rajasthani folk music), primary focus

  2. Mushairas and Kavi Sammelan

  3. Folk Dance (Bhangra and Dandiya)

Current goals of our organization:

  1. Talent-search and development:

    • Identify artists and performers with expert skills for displaying and preserving their art styles

    • Partner with mid-career artists to develop dynamic programming, and curate new experiences

    • Consult scholars with historical and contemporary knowledge of South Asian art

  2. Collaboration:

    • Partner various artists together, that come from different mediums (i.e. a dancer with a musician)

    • Search for organizations and venues interested in working with our council

    • Work with media development professionals to create innovative content

  3. Civic Engagement and Education

    • Provide residencies for emerging and mid-career artists

    • Increase electoral participation across Greater Houston using the arts

    • Facilitate music lessons from folk artists
