South Asian Americans are one of the fastest-growing demographics in the United States. Since 1960's, America has seen a rapidly expanding influx of families from places like Pakistan, India Nepal, and most recently Bhutan. Along with the passion and drive to make a better world, these immigrants bring their languages, cultures, and arts with them as well. As evidenced by the data on the left, South Asians are a sizable portion of the immigrants entering the United States yearly.

There is an important diversity in South Asia that has been cultivated over thousands of years, with an abundance of languages, foods, religions, traditions, and cultures. Yet, there is a misconception that all South Asians are similar. While at times the cultures and histories of South Asians may be shared , there are clear and wonderful distinctions.

SAFAC's inspiration is this diversity, with its idea for displaying South Asian American art as not one uniform entity, but as a mix of many different styles, genres, and types of dynamic, raw, and folk art. The key motive is to celebrate and expose the diversity of South Asia through collaborative and educational displays of its various art forms being created in the USA.

While the immigrant background informs our work, the hyphenated identity of this community and the artists that create with this in mind are important to represent. They represent a new breed of art, which is uniquely representative of South-Asian Americans. We are inspired to present such arts and partner with artists who are consciously creating such art.
